- Japan 25/11/2008 : Japanese Award
Opal Dunn was awarded with a prestigious award for her contribution to bringing storybooks to children around the world. The award is poetically called The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays. What a fitting name for a storybook award. It is especially in recognition of when Opal set up and supported the Bunko library system in Japan. These are mini-libraries for Japanese and English bilingual families bringing authentic storybooks to children.
- China 17-21/11/08 : YL SIG ON-line discussion
The IATEFL Young Learners Special Interest Group held an on-line fielded discussion on ELT issues in China. This was moderated by Dennis Newson and three TEFL colleagues from Beijing. The discussion raised questions of teaching to classes of 80+ children and how much learning actually takes place. There were some great strategies suggested on dealing with such large numbers. Another question was raised about the teacher's role and whether he/she needs to know the students for learning to take place.
- England 13/11/08 : The Roald Dahl Funny Prize
The Children's Laureate, Micheal Rosen, in association with Booktrust, announced the winners for this inaugral prize. The storybook The Witch's Children go to School, written by Ursula Jones, won the under 6 category. Read a review of this book.
- Paris 08/11/2008 : TESOL Colloquium France
On November 8, Nicky and Jo gave an all-singing and dancing poster presentation at the TESOL France Colloquium about using story books in the EFL classroom. We were so pleased to see such enthusiasm from teachers, educational advisors, parents and publishers about using storybooks in their classrooms. A special thanks to Gail Ellis, director of the British Council Teaching Centre in Paris for her continued support and to Ros Wright, the president of TESOL France, for her warm welcome.

We have recently got back from England where we attended the buzzing Cheltenham Literary Festival. We were especially excited about the prospect of attending workshops by Emily Gravett and Polly Dunbar. We weren't disappointed. The children (ourselves included!) watched, gawped and giggled as Emily brought her new book, Spells,to life before our very eyes. She drew weird and wonderful messed up dragons and half mice. Popping cards into cauldrons and showing us a Prince's bottom was just magic!
Read an article about Emily Gravett's rise to fame as an award-winning children's writer. Listen to Polly Dunbar talking about her amazing book Penguin.
